Free Software
There is so much free software out there these days, it's difficult to keep up.
It's not just little software that's free, either. Certain fully-featured applications - such as the Firefox web browser - are completely free to download.
A common tradition amongst software developers is to put out a 'limited" version of the software for free - and you have to pay for the full or "unlocked" version one you realise that life without it would be meaningless (joke)...
Some free software may be "free for non-commercial use", other titles may be free with no restrictions whatsoever - however, you need to check and be sure what you are getting.

http://www.download.com - Great site. Tons of free software of all kinds. You can select between Mac, PC, Mobile or Webware - to find the stuff for your platform easily - nice. Has the free demo versions of the big titles, as well as all kinds of other stuff. Recommended.

http://directory.fsf.org - giant list of free software (i.e. open source; "free as in speech")
http://www.freewarehome.com/ - Large collection of freeware titles
http://www.completelyfreesoftware.com/ - Hand picked selection, over 1700 titles. No Apple software.
http://www.techmixer.com - Techmixer has some nice listings of free software (and other free stuff too)
