Free Trees and Outdoor Plants: About

The simplest way to get trees for free? Collect the seeds yourself and plant them! There are many woodland places you can go for a walk and pick up tree seeds such as chestnuts, acorns, beech nuts, etc. One thing to note is that it is advisable to collect tree seeds from your local area - as trees from a long way away, may not be suited to your area. Also, it is not a good idea to attempt to bring tree seeds back from a foreign location, and there may well be severe restrictions against this, depending on where you are. This is for good reason; planting foreign trees can cause ecological problems.

When planting tree seeds, the simplest way is no imitate, to some extent, the conditions under which they would grow if they fell from the tree. Plant in winter or early spring in some moist, mossy soil or composet, keep watered, and wait...

If you are friends with a landowner who has woodland you may be able to ask them if you can dig up some small tree seedlings that have started growing near a big tree. One thing to remember is that tree roots, even from small seedlings, can go deep - and if you damage them severely when digging up the tree, the tree may die.

Certain trees, such as willow, will often grow from cuttings. Simply cut small branches from mature trees (get permission first if they are not yours) and then push them into pots. Make sure you water them well, also there are products available from gardening stores which help encourage cuttings to take root.
